OpenOffice.org is the open-source, quintessential productivity suite and free alternative to famous programs like Apple iWork and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org includes a word processor (Writer), a formula page (Formula), a data base utility (Database), a tool for creating slideshows (Presentation) and another for schematic representations (Drawing). OpenOffice.org finally has a native version for Mac, which is why it doesn't need to run the X11 server (only available for Mac OS X Intel for now). Although OpenOffice.org doesn't automatically run the guide that allows you to select the kind of document you want, you can access the different applications from the corresponding menu bar: Text Document, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Database, or Drawing. In addition, it is compatible with the main Microsoft Office file formats, which is why you can use OpenOffice to open PPS or PPT from PowerPoint on Mac or Word documents in DOC format.
The X window server for Mac OS provided by Apple. Runs in parallel with Aqua in rootless mode. Shares display with Mac OS. The root window of the X11 display is the size of the screen and contains all the other windows. The X11 root window is not displayed in rootless mode as Mac OS X. XQuartz is an open-source version of the X.Org X server, a component of the X Window System that runs on macOS. It formally replaced Apple's internal X11 app. The name 'XQuartz' derives from Quartz, part of the macOS Core Graphics framework, to which XQuartz connects these applications. XQuartz allows cross-platform applications using X11 for the GUI to run on macOS, many of which are not specifically.

I have the newest Mac running 10.13.3 and XQuartz is not working well at all. The X11 window that opens up during a session often becomes inactive even when I am typing in it. The resolution of the windows (like emacs) is very poor compared to the resolution of my LG monitor and I have not been able to get this adjusted. It works fine for bringing up figure windows, but does not work well for running remote GUI interface editors like Matlab. Anyone have any success with a different X11 server or know if XQuartz will be updated soon? Looks like their last update was in 2016 and I noticed that other people have had the same issues as I am having with windows coming in and out of being active.
I needed to forward X11 output from one of my Linux servers recently to run virt-manager (manager for virtual machines in KVM), and because it’s been a while I had to download and install X11 server again. As some of you know, Xorg server is no longer shipped/installed with macOS by default. First, ensure you have installed X11 XQuartz 2.7.8. After you install it, make sure to log out and back in for X11 to take effect on your system. If you have Mac OS 10.11, you will need to disable System Integrity Protection (SIP) functionality within Mac X. SIP is an added security feature that locks down /System /sbin and /usr paths in Mac X.
